The 2017 Yaris WRC was powered by a 1.6-litre inline-four turbocharged engine with direct injection, developed in accordance with 2017 WRC regulations. It produced approximately 380 hp. Development testing was conducted by Juho Hänninen, Tommi Mäkinen, and Jarkko Nikara. In the 2017 World Rally Championship, the Yaris WRC was entered by Toyota Gazoo Racing and driven by Jari-Matti Latvala, Juho Hänninen, and Esapekka Lappi. The car achieved immediate competitiveness in its debut season, securing two victories: Jari-Matti Latvala at Rally Sweden 2017 and Esapekka Lappi at Rally Finland 2017.
